Our Mission




Welcome to Thinking Globally, Debating Locally!
My name is Ciera, and my debate partner's name is Sam. We are very happy to have you here! We are members of the Forensics team at the United State's Air Force Academy. We are preparing to attend World University Debating Championships (WUDC) in Cape Town, South Africa. When we first started preparing for Worlds, we were unable to find any training programs, so we decided to create our own and share it in this blog! 

Mission:

Our mission has four parts: Train, Develop, Network, and Inspire.  We are very fortunate to have a fantastic debate coach, a funded program, and awesome institutional support from the English Department. Not all programs are as lucky. Thus, we wanted to build a program that was accessible to everyone! We believe that debate has the power to change lives by helping people access their voice! Even if your not a debater, we hope you can use this site to learn with us and become informed global citizens.

 Train: We believe the best way to get better is to practice! Thus, by watching rounds, debating, and researching we can prepare ourselves to succeed.

Develop: We wanted to create something that could be used to help future debaters at USAFA! Hopefully, we can create a platform that others can continue to contribute too!

Network: We love debate because it has allowed us to make friends all over the world. We want this blog to incorporate this aspect of debate.

Inspire: There is so much out there to learn about! Hopefully, we can help life long learners develop new passions and inspire others to keep on growing, learning, and debating!

Structure:

Our structure is simple. Each post is an individual lesson that we have completed. Most lessons will include a resolution, research, a reading list, and a couple of documentaries or podcasts. Additionally, we have created a couple of lessons dedicated to the format and structure of British Parliamentary Debate. On our pages we have lists of our favorite documentaries, books, and podcasts. If you have any suggestions, please post them in a comment!

Hi! My name is Ciera. (I'm the one on the left :))  I am a Political Science major. I love learning about anything and everything! I've been debating for 8 years. I started debate in middle school and absolutely loved it! This is my third year of BP. I love my debate partner! (Tip: Always partner with your best friend it makes debate much more interesting!)

Hi! My name is Sam.  (I'm the one on the left.) I am a Law and English double major. This is my 4th year debating. This is my third year of BP. (Tip: Don't be afraid of being new to debate!)

The Basics of Queer Theory

What does it mean to be Queer? How should the LGBTQ community define themselves? All these questions answered and more! Queer theory’s origin is hard to clearly define, since it came from multiple critical and cultural contexts, including feminism, post-structuralist theory, radical movements of people of color, the gay and lesbian movements, AIDS activism, many sexual subcultural practices such as sadomasochism, and postcolonialism. Learning Speaker Positions with Ciera

Deputy Leader of Government in Opening Government: I think that hardest position to learn is Opening Government. The Deputy Leader plays an important role in the round. Your job is to help your partner prep the model and prep their points. You should prep PM's speech before you start preparing your own.  The DPM has four obligations in the round. First, defend and rebuild the case started by the PM.  Second, destroy the opposition case. Third, add new arguments to the round. Fourth, respond to the back half team.  First, the Deputy Prime Minister defends the case presented by the Prime Minister by engaging any refutation presented against the case by the Leader of the Opposition. The Deputy should take up the Prime Minister’s argument one by one and defend each argument against any refutation by the Leader of the Opposition.
